Strengthening Your Creative Muscles

“Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart.”

Colossians 3:23

Creativity is not a fixed resource that you either have or do not. It is more like a muscle — it responds to training, it grows under challenge, it atrophies when it is not used, and it gets stronger the more consistently you engage it. Which means the work you do on the ordinary days, the days when nothing remarkable is happening, is not filler. It is training. It is where capacity is built.

Colossians puts it plainly: whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord. All your heart — not when inspired, not when the project is exciting, not when the audience is paying attention. All your heart, every time, because the work is ultimately an offering to God, and that does not change based on how motivated you feel on any given Tuesday.

Think about a developer who decides to spend one hour every morning working on a personal project — not for a client, not for a deadline, just to build something that stretches their current abilities. Some mornings they produce code they are proud of. Many mornings they delete more than they keep. But over six months, the problem-solving instinct they have developed through that consistent effort shows up everywhere in their professional work in ways they never could have predicted. The training transferred.

Moments that feel repetitive or ordinary are not setbacks in your creative development. They are exactly the moments that build the endurance and range that exceptional work requires. The skill you are developing in the quiet, unremarkable sessions is the same skill that will carry you through the high-stakes ones. God strengthens your effort when you bring all of yourself to it — even in the sessions that will never make a portfolio.

Stretch the muscle today. Challenge what you already know how to do. Work at it with your whole heart, for the One who gave you the gift in the first place. That is where creative capacity grows.

Today’s Focus
