Stories That Bridge the Distance Between People

“How good and pleasant it is when God’s people live together in unity.”

Psalm 133:1

There is a kind of story that does not just entertain one person but pulls two strangers into the same feeling at the same time. You have probably experienced it in a theater, in a gallery, in the comment section of a song where someone wrote the lyric that song describes my whole year. That is not an accident. That is a creative doing the work of building bridges without knowing exactly who would need to cross them.

The Psalms celebrate what it looks like when God’s people live together in unity. And while that sounds like a corporate or church vision, it is also a creative one. Stories are one of the most powerful tools God uses to bring divided people into shared understanding. They create empathy across distance. They make the unfamiliar feel human.

Think about a designer tasked with building a brand for a nonprofit working across two very different communities. The visual language they choose, the stories they tell in the photography, the way they frame the organization’s mission can either highlight differences or surface the deep humanity that both communities share. That is not just a design decision. It is a bridge-building act.

You may not set out to heal division every time you sit down to work. But the cumulative effect of creative work that honors the full range of human experience is that people feel seen. And when people feel seen by a story you made, they are more likely to extend that same seeing to someone unlike them. The ripple is real, even when you cannot trace it.

God uses creative storytellers to do what speeches and policies cannot always accomplish. Your work can break walls between people by reminding them of what they share. That is not a small thing. That is one of the most powerful gifts a creative can offer the world.
