Joy in Collaboration

“How good and pleasant it is when God’s people live together in unity.”

Psalm 133:1

The kickoff call went well. Everybody brought energy, ideas were flying, and the project felt alive with possibility. But two weeks in, the dynamic has shifted. Two team members keep talking over each other. One person has gone quiet. The shared doc has four conflicting directions and no one has resolved them. Collaboration that started as a gift has started to feel like friction.

This is the honest reality of creative teamwork. People who care deeply about their craft and their vision do not always find it easy to share creative space with others who care equally deeply. Different sensibilities, different working rhythms, different ideas about what good looks like. These differences can either make the work richer or make the room smaller. It depends on how you handle them.

The Psalmist wrote that it is good and pleasant when people dwell together in unity. That word “dwell” implies more than just tolerating each other. It means actually settling in together, making room for one another, choosing to stay in the relationship when it would be easier to pull back. Unity in a creative team is not the absence of disagreement; it is the commitment to work through disagreement without losing each other.

God uses creative teams to multiply what no single person could produce alone. The writer who can find the emotional core, paired with the designer who can make it visual, paired with the developer who can make it functional. Together they make something none of them could have made solo. Joy comes when you recognize the beauty in what others bring instead of measuring it against what you would have done differently.

When collaboration feels heavy, it helps to remember that it is a gift. The people across the table, even the ones who see things differently than you do, are part of how God expands your creative reach. Celebrate what they bring. The work will be better for it, and so will you.
